MULTIDISCIPLINARY MATERIAL and Tetxile DESIGNER
statement
Hi, I am Shakira, a multidisciplinary CMF designer specialising in woven and bio-engineered textiles. My work interweaves themes of human interaction and emotional attachment. By unlearning traditional textile-making techniques and exploring the relationship between materials and multi-sensory systems, I discovers innovative ways to imbue textiles with new values.
From intangible to tangible, my concepts metamorphose into a variety of media: woven textiles, photography, yarn wrappings, lampwork glass and most importantly human encounters through smell and touch. Such pursuit of adding extra dimension to my work inspired me to apply the same mindset to other mediums. In particular, it resulted in experiments with fine metal, perfume and bio-materials, which are now frequently featured in my work. Their inherent fragile nature introduces a unique transparency into my practice, so crucial in opening up a dialogue between me, my audience and our surrounding world.
As a result of discovering this new communication bridge, I am becoming more conscious of my environment. Therefore, to fulfil my role as a socially responsible designer, I also became more focused on a more sustainable approach to my work.
